Mr.
Cartwright also made an unsuccessful run for Boyd County sheriff in the late
1960s. He was a founding manager of Ashland’s Babe Ruth League and his team,
the FOP Reds, won the inaugural year. He was a lifetime member of the Ashland
Elks lodge and operated Cartwright Driving School from the late 1950s through
early 1970s. He was an avid golfer and owned racing greyhounds in his
retirement. He loved card games and swapping funny police and sports stories.
Mr. Cartwright, the son of the late Charles Chase and Maude Virginia Bonham
Cartwright, was born Jan. 14, 1909, in Bristol, Va., but was raised in
Ashland. He was a 1928 graduate of Ashland High School and graduated from
Virginia Polytechnic Institute in 1932. He served on the Ashland Police
Department for almost 30 years and retired with the rank of captain. He moved
to Holiday, Fla., in 1979.
He was the husband of the late Louise Riddell Cartwright and was preceded in
death by his brother, Charles W. Cartwright ,and sister, Mary Catherine
VanHorne. Survivors include three sons, Joe B. Cartwright Jr. (Helen) of
Ashland, Robert C. Cartwright (Mindy A.) of Howard, Ga., and Randy Cartwright
(Pam) of Holiday; a daughter, Sue Cartwright of Holiday; four grandchildren,
Kelly Jo Cartwright Morman of North Carolina and Alex, Kaitie and Charles
Cartwright of Howard.
Services will be today, April 30, at 10 a.m. at Dobies Funeral Home, 4910
Bartelt Road, Holiday. Burial will be in Meadowlawn Memorial Gardens.
